Swimming Certifications: Are We Prioritising Certificates Over Skills and Mental Well-being?

Updated: Apr 23, 2025

We believe swimming is more than a checklist of skills or a piece of paper at the end of a term. It’s a life-saving skill, a confidence builder, and a journey of personal growth. But in recent years, we’ve noticed a growing pressure from some parents to have their children achieve certificates within tight timelines. This has led us to ask an important question:

Have we started prioritising passing swimming exams over truly learning to swim?

The Problem with the “Fast Track” Mindset

It’s completely understandable for parents to want the best for their children—to see them progressing and achieving. But when the focus shifts to racing through levels just to “get the certificate,” we risk skipping the most essential part: mastery.

Swimming isn’t just about performing a stroke to pass an exam. It’s about understanding water safety, building endurance, learning to breathe with control, and developing body awareness. All of this takes time, patience, and practice. A word of advice taken from my father “Practice makes perfect, good practice makes good skill”

The Hidden Pressure on Kids

When children are pushed to pass quickly, we’ve seen them start to fear swimming lessons instead of looking forward to them. They compare themselves to others, become anxious about being “left behind,” and start viewing swimming as a test, rather than a fun, empowering activity.

This pressure can impact their mental well-being, self-esteem, and even their long-term interest in the sport. And when a child is constantly worried about “failing” rather than focusing on learning, their progress often slows down.

Our Philosophy: Learn the Skill, Not Just for the Certificate

At Kai Swim Academy, we believe every child learns differently. Some pick up strokes quickly, others take more time to build confidence in the water—and that’s okay.

We champion a skill-based approach where:

  • Progress is celebrated, not rushed

  • Emotional safety is just as important as physical safety

  • Certificates are earned as a by-product of real learning, not the main goal

A Gentle Reminder to All of Us

As coaches, educators, and parents, our shared goal is to equip children with lifelong skills, not just temporary achievements. Let’s remind ourselves to value progress over perfection, and confidence over certification.

Let’s give our kids the time and space to truly learn swimming—because once they do, the certificates will follow naturally.

We’d love to hear from you!
